DANCE / YOUTH / COMMUNITY
In 2022 Stompin celebrated its 30th year; a significant accomplishment. We marked the milestone through the creation and sharing of a short dance film.
This film saw 30 dancers (current and alumni, aged between 8 and 25) working in small groups to collaborate with the prolific and talented Scott Atkins (Lusy Productions) to film dance in sites across Tasmania. In collaboration with the young artists we identified locations of stark beauty that perfectly contrast and complement one another, holding social, political and historic significance to our community. This concept pays tribute to the very first work Stompin presented in 1991, under the direction of Jerril Rechter (Founding AD).
In this way, we found landscapes that represented our dancers and deepened their sense of connection to place. Stompin’s history is deeply rooted in site-specific dance. Nationally and internationally we are championing site-specific performance in the youth dance sector. The Dance Film Project highlighted this and shone a spotlight on Tasmania- the land that has inspired and supported us for 3 decades.
