Exhibition + Performance

Ground Beneath Ocean Between

At QVMAG Royal Park + Junction Arts Festival

Ground Beneath | Ocean Between is a contemporary dance/site-specific performance and exhibition project, exploring young Tasmanians’ relationship with the geography of their Island home.

The Performance

Presented in Junction Arts Festival this September, dance, art and technology transform a stark gallery into the lush Tasmanian wilderness. Using previously unseen footage of Tasmania's wild places, QVMAG, Stompin and 17 inspiring young dance-makers explore what it means to grow up in lutruwita/Tasmania. This performance is a coming together of professional and non-professional artists in a world-first collaboration.

The dancers will create evolving landscapes; working with accumulation, patterns, connection and disconnection unearthing the shared nature of people and place. Using projection and screens to create shifting layers and textures, we can reference humanity’s impact on nature over time. By bringing the images of nature into the gallery, framing the environment as art, we ask what is gained and what is lost?

A few words from the Artistic Director

This incredible performance project is the collective effort of one of the most dedicated and talented teams I have had the great pleasure of working with. I have created 10+ major shows with Stompin in my time with the Company and each one is uniquely powerful. Ground Beneath | Ocean Between has been no different, in that, it has been entirely different to anything else I have made with our young artists and professional collaborators.

The making of this work has taken 7 months. We leant into time— for lots of new learnings— dance technique, projection and film techniques, reflecting on our Island Home, dancing in nature, in the gallery, in the studio, with paint and charcoal, with new people and with each other.

I am in awe of the work that we have created for you but even more so at the overarching message of this work, unearthed by the Stompers- with resounding clarity.

Tasmania is beautiful, special and shared - across time and space the responsibility to take care of the land is everyones.

What an incredibly lucky community we are - to have these young people amongst us! I hope you see them in this show as the artists that they are - but also as beacons —for a positive future.

To the 9 collaborators who helped the Stompers to make “GBOB” - what exquisite, thoughtful, open minded and talented humans you are. Thank you for letting me be on your team!

We are honoured to work with QVMAG to bring you Ground Beneath | Ocean Between. Their team have let us disrupt their sacred gallery space over the last few months— when the lights went off and the ghosts came out as well as during operating hours — a big ask for their staff and patrons. But it is this kind of porous collaboration that truly allows young people to soar.

As you leave the performance we hope you journey in to many more incredible Junction Arts Festival events and performances. We thank Junction (always) for the spring-time vibes and for reaffirming for our young people that they are artists, now.

I’d like to sign off by saying thank you for coming, supporting, witnessing and shaping- these young artists know what it means to perform because you came.

CC xx

The Exhibition

With large scale digital projections depicting shifting landscapes and textures, coupled with live performances by Stompin, a fusion of technology and human expression will highlight the delicate balance of our existence, while encouraging visitors to reflect on the space and scale of our world.

Celebrating 30 years, Stompin is a vital force in Australian youth dance, leading the sector with its ambitious site-specific practice, innovative programs and empowering approach to the engagement and development of young dance artists in Launceston.
