Junction Arts Festival

This project involved past and present Stompin dancers and Artistic Directors, including former Stompin Artistic Director, Bec Reid and Choreographers, Ebony Nichols, Zoe Howard and Gabrielle Martin. Stompin recognises the difficulty of kick-starting a professional career in the arts and aims to support our alumni as they graduate from tertiary training, entering the professional sphere.

This project was assisted through Arts Tasmania and by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

For the first time Stompin invites three emerging artists, and past Stompers, back to make new works for Junction Arts Festival.

By their side for support and mentorship is past Stompin Artistic Director, Bec Reid.

Mentor Bec Reid

Bec is an Australian based performer, producer, director, choreographer and engagement specialist. Bec encourages people to experience their worlds in new ways through highly physical, participatory, practical, collaborative and celebratory actions. For 20+ years, Bec has passionately worked in the space where professional artists and communities converge, collaborating across projects locally, nationally and internationally. In partnership with Tristan Meecham, Bec leads All The Queens Men. A WAAPA graduate, Bec began her professional career as Artistic Director of Stompin, in regional Tasmania, together with Luke George. Bec was a key collaborator with German theatre makers, Rimini Protokoll as the Associate Director of reality theatre juggernauts, 100% Melbourne (City of Melbourne), 100% Darwin (Darwin Festival) and 100% Brisbane (Museum of Brisbane). Bec has collaborated with Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey and together with Ian Pidd and Kate McDonald, Bec is also founder/Artistic Associate of Everybody NOW! In 2017-18, Bec was a Fellowship recipient from the Australia Council for the Arts. Bec has continually served on various arts boards and regularly mentors young and emerging artists formally and informally. Bec’s true loves are Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Ceilidhs and Italo Disco.

Meet the Choreographers

  • All Thumbs

The awkward and uncomfortable moments that make us human, and the beautiful, revered, fine art. Can these things be the same? Can we look upon the fumble as if it were framed in gold?

    Choreographed by Zoe Howard

  • The Ball Is In Your Court

Disruption, overwhelming choice and unpredictability consumes objects and bodies. Are we able to spiral, rebound, and find an alternate route?

Through, around, above and below you. How do you navigate this landscape of rolling, bouncing yellow in a space they don't belong?

    Choreographed by Ebony Nichols

  • Listen In

For ‘listen in’ I wanted to speak from the body first – to allow the mind to take a back seat and see what the intelligence and memory of each cell can bring to the space. The work began with fleeting images that became held in my mind, then evolved into an exploration of cellular and fluid memory, and an intuitive listening to what was needed next. This work for me has been an experiment in just trusting and allowing the work to evolve, in not overthinking, and letting these young artists do what they do so well, improvising, creating and listening. I ask that you don’t try to ‘understand’ this work, but to let it wash over you. Any response or experience is valid.
